Monarchy debate

It is uncertain if the “power elite” would permit a full public debate on the monarchy (Letters, 27 December). Apparently the Treason Felony Act 1848 section three was removed recently from legislation due for repeal.

Noticeably, this act was passed in the “Year of revolution” and of course the Communist Manifesto.

To argue in public for anything other than a constitutional monarchy is punishable by life imprisonment.

Despite “freedom of speech” in human rights legislation, this, apparently, is still the legal position.

Arguably, the “power elite” must give cast-iron guarantees against prosecution for public debate to take place on this “vital issue”.
