Marital rites

Cardinal Keith O’Brien and other church leaders insist that the state has no right to change the definition of marriage because it is enshrined in Christian tradition (your reports).

Given their intractable opposition, perhaps the solution is to take marriage – whether gay or otherwise – out of the hands of the church, as happens on the continent.

In France, for example, all marriages must be performed by the civil authority before any religious ceremony takes place.

The fact is, this rite of passage is “owned by the people” and governments have a clear duty to alter laws to bolster the rights of family, society and personal freedom.
