Marital rites
Cardinal Keith O’Brien and other church leaders insist that the state has no right to change the definition of marriage because it is enshrined in Christian tradition (your reports).
Given their intractable opposition, perhaps the solution is to take marriage – whether gay or otherwise – out of the hands of the church, as happens on the continent.
In France, for example, all marriages must be performed by the civil authority before any religious ceremony takes place.
