Long way north

Lord Adonis may indeed be keen to keep his job as UK Secretary of State for Transport (Letters, 10 April) but, like his noble chum, Peter Mandelson, he is not going through the messy business of actually standing for election.

However, he has recently performed one very notable service in clarifying what the Labour Party's 2005 election manifesto meant by its commitment to a "north-south" high-speed rail link.

South is, predictably, London. North is Birmingham; maybe, in 30 years' time, Leeds.

On that basis, Scotland, viewed from the leather benches of the Palace of Westminster, must seem positively polar.
