Litter louts

David Roche (Letters, 23 March) observes that the Scottish population has little pride in the appearance of our country – with litter blighting our roadsides and open spaces.

But addressing the litter problem is something that Keep Scotland Beautiful, local authorities and the transport network do take seriously. Indeed, 6,311 50 fixed-penalty notices were issued last year across 27 local authority areas to those caught dropping litter.

We work every day to combat litter and the problems of waste, and with more than 70,000 volunteers committed to doing their bit to pick up litter as part of Keep Scotland Beautiful's National Spring Clean campaign this April, there is a growing groundswell of people who do have pride, and do want to make a difference to Scotland's appearance.

I would urge everyone to take responsibility for litter – together we can make it socially unacceptable, and stop spending 100m annually clearing up after that small minority who still don't care.
