Lib Dems misread

Lesley Riddoch (Perspective, 5 March) sedulously sat through fringe meetings at the Scottish Liberal Democrats’ conference, but her take on delegates’ attitude to the independence referendum is perverse.

She says the Lib Dems should want their preferred home rule solution to appear on the referendum ballot paper along with the independence option. The party conference view was that the referendum should have a single question – Yes or No to independence.

Only if the Scottish people vote No does it make sense to debate further devolution, including the Lib Dems’ proposals.

She says that the Lib Dems favour the single transferable vote. Yes, but only to elect candidates in multi-member constituencies, not to distinguish among nuanced options for the constitution.
