Lib Dem dilemma

If Dr David Pollard’s answer to our constitutional dilemma is the Liberal Democrats, then we are asking the wrong question (Letters, 26 March).

With the elderly Steel Commission report, and one currently in progress under Sir Menzies Campbell, and yet one more awaited from their Scottish leader Willie Rennie, we are close to losing count.

I expect they will retain their long-standing commitment to a UK federal system, with its implications for needs-based regional funding.

I expect them to explain how exactly that would be achieved without a massive, unwieldy administrative structure that could never hope to keep up to date with all of the relevant statistics necessary to implement it, especially as it could not be based on needs, but only on affordability.

And how exactly would it differ from the present system?
