Letter: Unjustified slur

Angus MacNeil, MP, accuses me of using the CBI name as a franchise cover for my long-held political views (Letters, 4 June). Nothing could be further from the truth. My public statements reflect CBI Scotland's collective policy positions as determined by our council. Mr MacNeil appears to believe fiscal autonomy for Scotland would be a free lunch. It would not, and I commend Bill Jamieson's article (same edition) as essential reading in that regard.

Mr MacNeil and some others adopt the age-old tactic of attacking the messenger to draw attention away from the weaknesses of their argument. Alas, for them, this often achieves exactly the opposite.

IAIN M McMILLAN
