Letter: Supreme humbug

I AM disturbed by the mental gymnastics of Alex Salmond's opponents (your report, 21 June).

These people, and it seems many of the Scottish legal fraternity, seek to portray Mr Salmond as attacking the judiciary as a whole. What the First Minister has done is to take issue with a London-based court which is seeking to interfere with Scottish judgments. It is surely one of the functions of the Scottish Government to defend Scots law from uninvited and probably illegal interference, according to the Act of Union, by some London court.

In her article regarding these nasty judges deciding that Scots have had their human rights impaired, Joan McAlpine (Perspective, 21 June) shows it has not taken her long to master the politician's art of selective choosing of facts. She fails to mention that the First Minister has been severely criticised by members of the Scottish judiciary and that he would prefer human rights cases to be dealt with outwith the UK altogether.

Professor Kelly has a relative who is a Labour politician - wow. More intolerantly, it seems lawyers should not represent clients of whom politicians disapprove.

Still it's good to know the First Minister is the real victim here with people being rude to him.
