Letter: Pavement pests

IN A timely letter before the better weather brings out even more cyclists, Ronald Scott (6 April) mentioned Regulation 64 of the Highway Code: “You MUST NOT cycle on the pavement.”

Regulation 69 makes it quite clear that the cyclist is subject to the same laws as the motorist and is required to obey all traffic signs and traffic lights.

If more maximum fines were levied then there would not be a problem. Dangerous cycling: £2,500; careless cycling: £1,000: cycling on pavement: £500.

But of course this would mean the police actually doing something.

Mr Scott asks how many prosecutions there have been. In West Lothian – zilch.

I suggest that the police should be given targets and then one can see if they are doing anything other than making soothing noises. In the meantime I suggest that pedestrians block the pavements to any errant cyclists and should that fail I have found that a stout walking stick between the spokes works wonders.
