Letter: Pass the visa

THE debate about the referendum has caused my wife some personal concerns about her nationality. Her parents were both Scottish, and she is therefore technically Scottish, although she has always thought of herself as British.

She was educated in England and has always worked there, and, as she is not on the electoral roll in Scotland, she will presumably have no vote in the referendum, but the outcome could have serious consequences for her.

Will she still be entitled to retain her British citizenship and passport if Scotland decides to become independent?

She values her British citizenship, the support she can get from British embassies and consulates across the world, and, of course, her membership of the European Union. How will Scottish citizenship be determined? Will it be by residence, birth or personal choice?

Where will it leave her, and countless other Scots who are currently living outside Scotland and may be relying on their British (and EU) citizenship for their passports and their right to work in different parts of Europe?
