Letter: No tartan skirts

Regarding the item on "quality tartan" (5 November), having spent a day in Edinburgh last week with a Dutch friend looking for tartan skirts, not kilts, and visiting six likely shops, I was not only disappointed for her but also embarrassed for Scotland to discover that no ready-made tartan skirts were to be had.

Surely the excuse that most customers preferred their own tartan is a sales opportunity missed, as not all want either a kilt or a specific tartan.
