Letter: Middle East fears

Dr John Cameron ("Fears for Copts", Letters, 10 May) is incorrect when he claims that "for decades, secular Arab governments protected Christian and other minorities".

It is now more than 60 years since most Jewish communities in so-called secular Arab countries, most of which had existed for at least 2,300 years long before the Arabs appeared on the scene, have been expelled.

As the Arab saying has it, "First the Saturday people, next the Sunday people."

It is, therefore, not surprising that "fear is mounting among Christians throughout the Middle East that rioters will turn on them… (which] is likely to end with total ethnic and religious cleansing."
