Letter: Mail obligations

SNP MP Mike Weir is tabling a motion at Westminster effectively banning delivery companies that abandoned Scotland during our recent poor weather from bidding for postal services.

Postal services are vital to us all and Mr Weir has recognised that private delivery companies had let Scotland down, whereas Royal Mail carried out its obligation to provide a universal service to the country and did not abandon its responsibility.

This is a motion that those in the business community, who are struggling through severe economic pressures, must get behind. All Scottish MPs, especially those in rural communities, must support this motion.

Business Secretary Vince Cable would do his cause in these troublesome days no harm if he persuaded his colleagues to reconsider privatisation of such a vital service.
