Letter: Lords cash has a lot to answer for

SCOTLAND’S Labour boss Johann Lamont says “No one in Labour has a job for life” (News, 6 May). Presumably this includes those in the House of Lords? Therefore can we expect no more golden goodbyes for those often found wanting in the lower house or, worse, rejected by the electorate?

The list of those who went to Westminster as impassioned MPs never to return once tempted by the ermine on their shoulders is legendary. The £300 daily “lump” or tax-free attendance allowance obviously has a valuable role to play as no-one ever seems to resign from the Lords over matters of a principle do they?
