Letter: Level best

Steuart Campbell (Letters, 9 May) may have been slightly facetious in suggesting the use of the alternative vote (AV) for the constituency elections for the Scottish Parliament.

There is little doubt that the Additional Member System would be improved by a change to AV for the constituencies and by the adoption of open lists for the regional members.

But better by far would be to change the whole system to STV-PR. Then there would be no election deficit. All MSPs would be elected on the same basis and all would be directly accountable to a constituency of local voters.
