Letter: Kudos to Murray

"Here we go again" says your editorial (14 June) about Andy Murray, and, indeed, in the case of The Scotsman, this is true.

You place the full weight of expectation on his shoulders and make it clear that, should you be disappointed, then he will be to blame. Your view of the world of tennis is astoundingly simple: (a) Murray is an extremely talented player, (b) therefore he should win Wimbledon, (c) if he fails to win, then it is because he lacks "grit" and "mental toughness".

No recognition in this simple world that the men's draw is full of strong, talented players, at least three of them arguably more so than Murray.

Whether he wins Wimbledon or not, none of this changes the fact that he is, by far, the most accomplished British player in the game in our lifetime. Looking across sport in general, it isn't so unusual for a Scot to be talented.

What is extraordinary is Murray's work ethic and dedication to make the best of the talent he has. What a pity that The Scotsman is unable to appreciate that.
