Letter: Keeping the faith

Regardless of the issues raised in his article about the monarchy (Comment, 28 December), John McTernan's assertion that "Scotland is no longer a religious country" must be challenged on the basis of fact.

His unsubstantiated statement that "the largest faith group in Scotland is those of no faith" simply does not stand up to scrutiny.

The most recent census reports that 65 per cent of the population of Scotland profess to be Christian and another 2 per cent profess another religion, while 28 per cent professed no religion.

Whether or not we discount the 5 per cent who chose not to answer the question, "people of faith" outnumber "people of no faith" by a very large margin indeed.
