Letter: Inclement weather

Midsummer's Day and I have just returned from walking the dogs in the local park. We were in battle gear, me in anorak, waterproof trousers and carrying my umbrella while the boys were in their rain jackets.

We lost the battle with the elements, though, as we all ended up soaked. Now as I sit here warming up with a cup of tea I wonder if historians got it wrong. Did our forbears leave these islands for Australia or America specifically to look for work?

I'm not sure, but I think it quite possible that they went in search of dry warm weather, at least for the summer months! Is it too much to ask?
