Letter: Greek yearning

John Cameron’s discussion of a “reformed euro” (Letters, 10 May) is no help to those people suffering in Greece.

Apparently thousands of Greeks depend on charities for basic meals because of the “austerity” measures. Resurrecting the old “dollar and gold” link in an international exchange system is a nostalgic anachronism.

Surely what is needed now is determined political action to deal with many people’s urgent needs.

Arguably, for too long elected governments have been in thrall to global bankers and financiers.

Isn’t it time for all left-of-centre political parties to make common cause against “austerity?”
