Letter: Gathering storm

What seemed like a good idea to celebrate the the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns with a clan gathering has now turned sour with many creditors left out of pocket as event organiser The Gathering Ltd went into administration, leaving a mass of debts.

This situation was exacerbated with a secret loan being approved by the Scottish Government to pay Lord Sempill's company 180,000.

It seems that many people may have been hoodwinked into thinking the firm was backed by the Scottish Government and, therefore, their money would be safe, but the grim reality is that they will not receive any dividend from this shambles of a company that got it all wrong.

If the plan is for another gathering in 2014 to coincide with the Commonwealth Games, then it would need sponsorship from major companies before it would have any credibility with suppliers.
