Letter: Funding farce

Education secretary Mike Russell is no nearer to finding a solution on the subject of financing for Scottish universities. Imposing tuition fees on students in Scotland is, Mr Russell says (your report, 4 June), "off the agenda".

There is an increased likelihood that fees south of the Border will be raised, to the financial detriment of Scottish universities. The impending cuts in public expenditure make it all but impossible to compensate Scottish universities through taxation.

How ironic would it be if it were during the tenure of office of an SNP-led administration – the party which reputedly stands up for Scotland's interests – that Scottish universities began their slide down national and international league tables?
