Letter: Fry called to heel

How craven of Stephen Fry to bow to the gods of political correctness (or film distributors) and elect to change the name of Wing Commander Gibson's dog (and the codeword for success) in his remake of The Dambusters (your report, 11 June).

No matter how noble the cause, or small the alteration, he is rewriting history.

As far as I know, the only deviation from fact in the original film was in the shape of the bomb; it was still on the secret list when the film was made.

If Mr Fry doesn't like the unvarnished history, he shouldn't remake the film. He shouldn't remake it anyway - remakes rarely achieve anything other than the tarnishing of the original.
