Letter: Fare muddle

I HAVE just learned that bus fares are due to rise yet another 10p (your report, 1 March), while reading of Councillor Gordon MacKenzie’s confidence that trams and buses in combination will make a profit from day one.

Given that passenger estimates for the trams have been revised down to about half the initial estimate, I think I can guess how this profit may be arrived at.

Why are these services being combined? Edinburgh has a great bus service and a tram fiasco. We will end up with a single system that is poorer than when this started. Can the trams not be separated out?
