Letter: Drug reforms

Are we at last wakening up to the reality that our current strategy on control of abuse of drugs is a complete failure as the methadone programme is now discredited and causes many more problems than it resolves (your reports)?

It is time to take a fresh look at what really works in the battle against drugs and that has to follow some form of registration scheme of drug users and the controlled issue of "safe" drugs to stop the carnage in our communities with poisonous concoctions being sold by dealers who couldn't care less who dies as a result.

Other, more progressive countries are tackling the drug problem with the above approach and seeing the benefits to the users and the decline of the evil drug dealers' trade.
