Letter: Drink decision

Next week in the Scottish Parliament will vote on the Alcohol Bill. This legislation will, most likely, see politicians split on party divides and opposition parties voting down the Scottish Government on its intended plan of introducing a 45p minimum unit price on alcohol.

There has been a lot of opinion from politicians on all sides, yet I'm still to be convinced that opposition politicians have a credible alternative to solve this scourge on our society. Only this week researchers announced that alcohol is more damaging to society than heroin (your report, 1 November).

To me this is a startling statement and a reason why drastic action must be taken to tackle alcohol misuse now. Therefore, I hope our politicians will see the importance of finding lasting solutions to tackling Scotland's problem with alcohol and back the proposal of minimum unit pricing.
