Letter: Culture war

Gerry Hassan's article (Perspective, 6 November) about negative perceptions of American Republicans was excellent. The routinely snide and faintly mocking reporting of the Republican Party and its supporters in much of the British media, especially the BBC, says more about their own default philosophy than it does about right-of-centre politics in America.

The liberally minded elite of Europe can find it hard to accept that their views are not sweeping aside opposing ideas in America as they are tending to in Europe. America has a conventional "culture war", while Europe is territory occupied by liberal forces with pockets of (increasingly underground) resistance.
