With news that UK construction industry workloads have turned positive for the first time in two years, it was disappointing to learn that, in Scotland, the net balance of workloads remained in the red, at -6 per cent.

Such revelations, along with recent statistics showing that the rate of private house building slumped to under a half of the level it was two years ago, do nothing to boost the confidence of those involved in the industry.

Our members rely more than ever on a consistent flow of public sector work to sustain their order books.

With news that a 300 million investment to deliver 35 new schools is going ahead (your report, 4 June), we need more action to breathe life back into private sector construction and to sustain public capital investment in infrastructure, schools, hospitals and affordable housing. Building a long-term economic recovery in Scotland relies on a healthy construction sector.
