Letter: Angry anglers

I REPRESENT five anglers from the west of Ireland.

While visiting your country last month, near Montrose – as we have done for many years – we became aware of a decision by the Scottish Government to extend commercial netting from the end of August to the middle of September at the mouth of the rivers North and South Esk.

This, in my view, defies logic. The only people who benefit from this are the ones who hold the netting licences.

The economy is none the richer – the rivers certainly are not – and it sends the wrong message to those people who work hard to encourage tourism and promote angling.

We are not returning to the area in 2012, and a decision to fish elsewhere is now on the agenda.
