Lesser Britain

Colin Wilson's belief (Letters, 7 April) that the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" would continue to exist if Scotland secedes is unsupportable.

Without Scotland the mainland element would change from Great(er) Britain to something like Lesser Britain – more commonly known as England.

An equally startling change would come from the removal of the Scottish elements of the blue background and white diagonal cross from the Union Flag.

These are some of the last trappings of what at one time was the world's greatest empire. It is sad to see them go.
