Left of centre

I agree with much that Joyce McMillan wrote about royal impartiality (Perspective, 26 June), but would dispute her comment that “an elected British government (Attlee 1945 onwards) presided over a complete centre-left revolution in the British state, nationalising everything – companies, railways, etc”.

Joyce McMillan’s much-used phrase, “centre-left”, is wrong.

Clem Attlee’s government was socialist and, like nature, was red in tooth and claw.
