Leadership traits

There seems no doubt that the move by Geoff Hoon and Patricia Hewitt to call a secret ballot on their party leader (your report, 7 January) was prompted from within the Cabinet. As a former whip, it is inconceivable that Mr Hoon would have taken this initiative without some measure of support from the inner team.

It is, of course, far too late for them to change their leader. In any event, the problem with the government is not confined to its leader. The idea of Harriet Harman taking over as caretaker is absurd. Nowadays, voters expect to be told who will lead them as prime minister.

Part of Gordon Brown's problem is Tony Blair. He was the best actor/communicator we have ever had as prime minister. That was his greatest strength. Unfortunately, Mr Brown lacks these attributes. The public finds him "dour" and uncomfortable in front of the camera.

Tory leader David Cameron has many of Mr Blair's skills in communicating with the public. His challenge is to convince voters he has the toughness necessary for the challenges he would face if elected. He leads a team. That team has talent and intellect. It has more experience than Mr Blair's team had when they took over.

The Conservatives served four terms in government; that was too long. With Labour having served three, it is time for a change.
