Keeping tracks

JP Thomas (Letters, 3 December) rightly points out how new hill tracks can scar the landscape.

However, they can also help open up the countryside to walkers and cyclists and they do green over – in time.

Tearing them up will still leave scars so why not leave appropriate tracks in place so long as they are opened up for use by the 
general public?
