Just the start

Ian Stewart (Letters, 11 January) says that an independence referendum will not end the matter because “no issue is ever settled ‘once and for all’”. This is true only one way.

If the Union were ended I don’t think anybody believes it could simply be put back together with the next change of electoral fashion (or it turning out that we have difficulty in making our national living as the “Saudi Arabia” of the world’s most expensive and least reliable electricity).
