It's all English

David Purves (Letters, 14 January) continues to delude himself, and others, in his claim that changing the name of a language creates a new one. Whether it is called Scots, Scotch or Scottis is irrelevant; it's still Inglis, and all words in common usage are already included in English dictionaries.

Surely the reason English was standardised, like French, Italian, German etc, was so that as many people as possible could communicate with each other and avoid potentially costly misunderstandings.
