Israel's aid bonus

GEORGE Shanks (Letters, 8 January) gives the positive side of why we should seek inspiration from Israel's economic success.

I have no axe to grind but, for the sake of balance, we should be aware that the Israeli economy is reliant on a vast amount of military and non repayable financial assistance from the United States.

This assistance bolsters the Israeli state while it is in a continuous state of emergency. How would the Israeli economy adjust to a Middle East settlement and a reduction in US financial aid?
