Hierarchy’s sins

Dave McEwan Hill’s letter (30 August) is by far the best written I have read on the attitude of the Catholic Church to same-sex marriages.

I am not a Catholic but two of my sons married girls from Catholic families and I attended many Catholic services and the first communions of four of my grandchildren.

Like Mr McEwan I have admiration for much of the work of the Catholic Church and I am distressed by the intolerant and unsympathetic attitude of its hierarchy to same-sex couples who simply wish to show their commitment to each other.

I take comfort in the likelihood that many priests and lay members of the Catholic Church do not share their bishops’ views.
