A great loss

I was very sorry to read of Alan Finlayson’s death (Obituary, 23 January).

I was fortunate enough to be a member of the Lothian Children’s Panel when he was the Reporter and was always impressed by the depth of his legal knowledge and the way he clarified complicated legal issues for us.

The obituary rightly mentioned his warmth and humanity but did not mention his lively sense of humour, which lightened the mood of many an otherwise troubling session. He was, frankly, a genius.
