Hamish Grey, the chief executive of the Scottish Golf Union, is being a little complacent if he believes that “there are no less people playing (golf)” (your report, 10 December).

On 29 August, The Scotsman reported the results of the latest Scottish Household Survey, which showed that the proportion of the Scottish population playing golf had fallen from 9 per cent in 2007 to 6 per cent in 2012, meaning a reduction of about 150,000 over the past five years.

As many clubs rely as much on visitors as on members this reduction is very significant and worrying for the future of many clubs.
