Full of potential

Sir Bob Reid (Letters, 29 August) claims that independence would “downgrade the potential” of young Scots by depriving them of the birthright their forebears earned – “the natural right to go south”, where presumably they have more chance of prospering.

This implies that those young Scots who choose to stay in Scotland are disadvantaged. Nor does he consider an equivalent “natural right” of young people to achieve their full potential in their own country. He’s either having a laugh, or channelling Dr Johnson (“the noblest prospect which a Scotsman ever sees is the high road that leads him to England”). No, I’ve read the rest of the letter – he’s having a laugh.
