Fringe margins

YOUR article about Fringe numbers being down due to the weather and the Olympics (9 August) is, I am sure, true.

However, there is another factor which is the increasing cost of ticket prices.

When I first came to the Festival back in the 1960s the Fringe was cheap and cheerful and the International Festival a little expensive. Now Fringe shows can cost up to £20, often for little more than hour of variable quality entertainment.

This makes many people think twice about the number of shows they attend.

In contrast, a friend is coming to stay with me for a few days for the International Festival and I have just booked her seven concerts at a total cost of £36!

Now I know you can get some cheaper shows at the Fringe but there remains some real questions to be answered.

Have the costs and prices risen too high? Who is making the profits, if any, on the Fringe? Is there a danger of the Fringe being priced out of people’s reach?
