Freedom threat

Isn’t the “threat to personal privacy” posed by Google Glass (Perspective, 5 December) also an attack on individual freedom?

Typically, freedom is discussed as having two aspects: freedom to do what and freedom from what.

Surely citizens should be able to walk down the street free from being filmed or
recorded. The only exception to this would be in the interests of security from
terrorism or crime.

However, excessive use of cameras in modern life has led to the label the “surveillance society”. Arguably, individual freedom in both its
aspects is more important than the commercial interests of Google.
