Forgotten heroes

The recent television programme Scots at War failed to mention that the Highland soldiers who sustained the honour of the British name in many a bloody field – the heroes of Egypt, Corunna, Toulouse, Salamanca and Waterloo – were evicted with the rest during the Highland Clearances.

The widows and orphans of those who had fallen were also crammed into the fetid holds of emigrant ships.
