Food for thought

Stephen Jardine must agree that the educational benefits of taking children to proper restaurants from an early age must not be overlooked (Comment, 26 May). Experience and habits formed early in life are the most enduring.

If a young person’s only experience of social eating and drinking is fish and chips in the park washed down with cheap Tesco vodka it is no wonder that 80 per cent of them are unemployable.

So it is for the good of society to ensure that parents can take their children to good restaurants from an early age, and that other diners tolerate them.

It is also to the long term benefit of the restaurant business.

What fraction of the fast-food cheap-booze culture will go on to frequent proper restaurants? A much smaller fraction than that of those who have been brought up to think eating out is normal.
