Fizz on the track

The 09:12 from Edinburgh pulled into North Berwick last Saturday. A group of glamorous women got off, intent on an entertaining day, one of them clutching a glass of buck’s fizz.

Boarding the train, I asked the crew if all passengers could expect a drink. The answer was no, but I might be lucky and find a plug socket to charge my phone.

Perhaps deciding that answer didn’t have quite the panache to which the new Dutch owners aspire, one of the young crew returned a few minutes later:

“I’ve spoken to the on-board caterers and unfortunately we don’t have any buck’s fizz, but we do have a very nice 1883 Bollinger in the fridge, so if you’d like a glass of that I’d be happy to bring you one.”

Abellio don’t yet have on-board catering on the North Berwick train, of course, but if that’s the way they’re thinking – vive l’Europe.
