First things first

As Des McNulty suggests (Perspective, 2nd June) Scottish independence would almost inevitably lead to a written constitution.

Several have been suggested. Personally I hope that we leave decisions on the details till we have independence, though inevitably arguments will be rehearsed now.

It seems sensible to separate the issues of independence and the monarchy. Thus, on the day independence is restored the present Queen would remain our head of state.

Thereafter it would be up to us what we want for the future. I have previously advocated that we should remain “The Kingdom of the Scots”, declare the throne vacant and elect a Guardian as head of state.

Whatever the ultimate choice we can take time for debate, and for a referendum if that seems needed. Let’s get Independence first.
