First buster

Not before time the Scottish Government grasps the nettle by cutting subsidies to global bus companies (your report, 7 February). Public transport is a graphic example of politics trumping economics and is a contributor to government debt.

UK oil output fell 17 per cent in 2011 and has fallen by a half over a decade. Supply has fallen while demand hasn’t, which means the UK imports oil in a global market.

This means an ever-rising import bill and an increasing deficit in the UK current account.

Arguably underused buses are an inefficient use of oil and contribute to the UK’s structural deficit.
