False tradition

Your front page (24 March) shows Aberdeen University’s new rector being carried down the High Street of the city riding a bull. This, your article states, is dictated by “tradition”.

As a graduate of Aberdeen and a former participant in a rectorial battle, some time in the Dark Ages, I must admit to utter ignorance of this “tradition”, having never heard of it before.

May I suggest, as the accompanying photograph would seem to confirm, that the “tradition” is complete bull?
