Facing dementia

Prime Minister David Cameron has to be praised for highlighting the “scandal of dementia”, while also announcing increased funding for dementia care research.

I worked as a nurse for 30 years, much of that time in the field of dementia care.

We are facing a perfect storm regarding dementia care: increasing numbers of dementia sufferers, as we are tending live to a physically healthier old age, combined with budgetary restrictions in health and social care following the credit crunch.

But thank you Prime Minister Cameron for at least admitting that there is a problem. Now comes the more difficult part, developing solutions.

We also need resources to provide high quality person-centered care until an effective treatment is found.
