An eye on pupils

I felt quite uplifted by your headline, “Pupils given credit with £10 of savings” (9 August).

Recently, the American word, “student”, has been used in the media, and so increasingly in schools, to describe the young people who attend school.

There always used to be a clear distinction between school pupils and students who attended colleges or universities.

Why are we slipping into the ambiguous American terminology? Hopefully, if you continue to use “pupils” then we might return to the much clearer standard English usage.

Oh, and I enjoyed reading the article, too.
