Equality dispute

I feel compelled to write in defence of the comments of Philip Lardner, Conservative candidate for North Ayrshire and Arran (your report, 28 April). As a parent, grandparent and retired teacher, I agree with his difficulties if required to teach children that homosexuality is normal behaviour and such partnerships are "an equal lifestyle" choice to heterosexual marriage.

Such concerns are not the imaginings of bigots and homophobes but born of a recognition that "tolerance and respect for homosexuality" does not equate with its "promotion".
